Dussehra 2026: Vijayadashami, the Procession, and the Smoke

Dussehra 2026: Watch the Effigy. Do Not Jog Through the Smoke.
Vijayadashami in 2026 is Tuesday, 20 October. In much of north India that is Dussehra: Ramlila through the preceding nights, and Ravana's effigy in the evening. In Bengal and many eastern cities the same tithi closes Durga Puja. Bijoya Dashami and the main visarjan land on Wednesday, 21 October. Sharad Navratri has already been running since 11 October. This note is the last day, not a repeat of the garba guide.
The day is standing, walking, a crowd, sweets, and in many towns a lot of smoke. It is a good evening. It is a bad evening for a personal-best run, for a child with asthma parked under the effigy, or for wading into a ghat because the idol is going in.
Chest pain, fainting in a crush, or a burn needs care. This is a festival note, not a clearance to skip inhalers.
The north Indian evening
Ramlila grounds fill up hours before the effigy is lit. Go earlier if you want a seat, eat something before you leave, and carry water. October evenings can still be warm in a packed ground. If you feel clammy or dizzy, step out of the press of people. The story does not require you to stand for three hours without a drink.
When the effigy burns, the smoke is the part people underestimate. Watch from upwind if you can tell which way it is blowing. Do not run or cycle through the plume to "get a look". Children, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma or a recent chest infection should stay well back. A celebratory walk home on a side street beats a jog through the field while it is still burning.
- Shoes you can stand in. New sandals plus a dusty ground is a blister story.
- One sweet after a real meal. The box at the pandal is not dinner.
- Hold children's hands in the crowd and near the fire line.
- If your city also marks World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October, that is a separate health date. The effigy is not a strength session.
Bengal, and the water on the 21st
If your Dussehra is Durga Puja, the 20th is still a long day of pandal hopping and the 21st is the farewell. Walking between pandals counts. A hard gym session on top of a midnight crawl does not. On visarjan day, treat the river or the tank the way you would any crowd near water. Stay where you can stand. Do not send children in. No alcohol before you go near the edge. A small home farewell is a calmer goodbye than a crush at the ghat.
Sindur khela and the visiting that follows are joyful and tiring. Sit when you need to. The person who has been cooking since morning does not owe anyone a workout.
The morning after
Wednesday is for a normal breakfast, a walk, and a shower if you stood in smoke. Resume usual strength when your throat and your sleep agree. If you wheeze the next day and you do not usually wheeze, get it checked rather than "training through it".
FAQ
When is Dussehra 2026?
Tuesday, 20 October 2026. In much of Bengal the visarjan is on Wednesday, 21 October.
Can I run on Dussehra evening?
Not through the effigy smoke, and not as a hard session before a long stand in a crowd. A walk earlier in the day is enough.
What if I have asthma?
Watch from farther away, carry your inhaler, and leave if the air turns thick. The festival does not require a front-row spot.
How many sweets?
One serving with a real meal. Grazing from afternoon until the effigy is the part that adds up.
Is pandal hopping exercise?
The walking is real. The late night and the fried snacks are also real. Count the walking, and still sleep.
Should I fast the next day to compensate?
No. Water, a regular plate, and a walk beat a compensatory fast.
