Gita Jayanti 2026: Mokshada Ekadashi, a Long Sit, and When You Eat Again

Gita Jayanti 2026: Read What You Can. Eat Again on Monday.
Gita Jayanti in 2026 is Sunday, 20 December. It falls with Mokshada Ekadashi, the ekadashi of the bright half of Margashirsha. In a New Delhi panchang the tithi runs from about 10:09 pm on Saturday, 19 December, to about 8:14 pm on Sunday. The day is kept as the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita: Krishna speaking to Arjuna, a text of about 700 verses in 18 chapters, on action, knowledge, and devotion. You do not have to finish all 700 in one sitting for the day to count. You do have to know when the fast ends.
People who keep Mokshada Ekadashi break it on dwadashi, Monday, 21 December, after sunrise. The exact parana window moves by city. Look it up the night before. Eating at 8 pm on Sunday because you are hungry is a different observance from the one your temple named. Eating nothing until Monday afternoon because a forward said so, when your panchang opened the window at sunrise, is how people get ill.
The fast and the floor
The usual skip is grains. Some people take fruit, milk, and water. Some take nothing. Winter mornings in the north are cold, and a waterless day in a woollen room is still a waterless day. Drink if your rule allows it. If you are pregnant, on insulin, or you get chest pain when you have not eaten, keep the reading and drop the fast. The Gita is a talk about how to act in a difficult hour. Skipping a prescribed medicine is not the lesson.
- Sit supported. A cold floor and a two-hour recitation are a back complaint by evening. Use a cushion or a chair. Pain down the leg means stop the pose, not push the verse.
- Cover your feet. December floors steal heat. A shawl is equipment.
- If a group is chanting, stand and sit in turns. Locked knees in a row of people are a fainting risk, same as any long assembly.
- A short walk in the afternoon sun, if the air is acceptable, keeps the day from becoming only a sit. Skip the long run. You may not eat until Monday.
- Break the fast on Monday with water first, then the food your house uses, then a normal lunch. Do not celebrate the end of the fast with a pile of fried bread and nothing else.
You will not finish the book today
Eighteen chapters is a lot of Sanskrit, or a lot of any translation, for a Sunday with family in the house. Read one chapter you can say back in your own words. A common starting place is the second, where the question is how to act when you do not feel ready. Then close the book. The training version of that idea is small: do the walk you planned, eat when the fast allows, sleep. A perfect recitation followed by a wrecked Monday is not steadiness.
If your city air is poor, read indoors. December in the Indo-Gangetic plain does not care that the text is sacred. Your lungs still meet the same PM. The winter air guide is the longer note. Today, the window can stay shut and the reading can still happen.
