Govardhan Puja 2026: Annakut, the Cow, and the Gujarati New Year

Govardhan Puja 2026: The Annakut Is for Sharing. Your Plate Is One Serving.

Govardhan Puja in 2026 is Tuesday, 10 November, two days after Diwali. The story is Krishna lifting the hill to shelter people from a storm. In temples and homes the day becomes Annakut, a piled offering of many dishes, and in plenty of Gujarati and Marwari houses it is also Bestu Varas, the new year, when books are opened and cattle are honoured. Vikram Samvat 2083 is the year that turn of the calendar marks.

The fitness problem is not devotion. It is a table that looks like a dare. You can eat well, thank the cook, and still walk in the evening. You do not have to finish the hill, and you do not have to punish yourself on Wednesday for having liked lunch.

How to eat from a mountain

Annakut is variety. Take a small spoon of several things rather than a heap of the three fried ones. Include the vegetables and the dal. Sweets can be one piece you actually want. If you are the person who cooked fifty items, you have already done a physical day. Sit down and eat a plate someone else serves you.

  • Water through the afternoon. A salty festive lunch without fluid is a headache by evening.
  • If you have diabetes, medicines stay on time. Walk ten minutes after the main meal. Do not skip breakfast to "save up" for the hill.
  • Cattle and courtyard visits mean uneven ground and children underfoot. Ordinary shoes. No running start near a tied animal.
  • Leftovers are the next two meals if they were refrigerated. A dish that sat in a warm kitchen all afternoon is not a midnight snack.

The new year, and the day after

Bestu Varas is accounts, greetings, and a fresh book. It is also a fine day to write one training line for the week after Diwali: two strength sessions, walks on the other days, and sleep. You do not need a new identity on 10 November. You need the week to become ordinary again.

Wednesday is Bhai Dooj in many homes, so do not plan your hardest session for Wednesday morning either. Tuesday evening can be a slow walk. Thursday is soon enough for the bar. If your stomach is still negotiating the Annakut, walk and leave the lifts.

FAQ

When is Govardhan Puja 2026?

Tuesday, 10 November 2026. It is also Annakut and, for many Gujarati families, Bestu Varas.

Do I have to taste every dish?

No. A small plate with vegetables, one or two favourites, and a single sweet is still participating.

Can I train that morning?

An easy walk or a short session, then stop. Do not do a long fasted workout before a huge lunch.

What about the food that is left?

Cool it and refrigerate it. Reheat it properly the next day. Do not leave milk sweets in the open overnight.

Is this the same as Diwali night?

No. Diwali is 8 November. This is the food mountain two days later, and then Bhai Dooj on the 11th.

I feel overfull. Should I sweat it out?

No. Walk, water, and a normal dinner or none. A noon conditioning class on a distended stomach helps nobody.
