Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartik Purnima 2026: Langar, Lamps, and a Cold Walk

24 November 2026: One Full Moon, Three Ways of Keeping It

Tuesday, 24 November 2026 holds more than one calendar. It is Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birth anniversary marked in gurdwaras with prakash, kirtan, and langar. It is also Kartik Purnima, and in Varanasi and other river towns it is Dev Diwali, when ghats fill with lamps. Karthigai Deepam is kept in Tamil homes the same night. You do not have to attend all of them. You do have to eat, watch your footing, and get home.

Late November nights in the north are cold. A shawl, closed shoes, and a plan for children matter more than a new outfit you cannot walk in.

If you are at a gurdwara

Langar is a meal eaten together, usually simple and filling: roti, dal, a vegetable, sometimes kheer. Sit if a seat is there. Take what you will finish. The point is sharing, not a challenge to clear the line twice. Cover your head the way the gurdwara asks, leave your shoes where you are told, and wash your hands. If you join a nagar kirtan, that walk can be long. Wear shoes you trust. Carry water. Step out if you feel faint. A procession is not a race, and it is not a place to push a pram through a gap that is not there.

People with diabetes should eat on time even if the programme runs long. A banana or a small snack in a bag is sensible. Devotion and a hypo are not the same thing.

If you are at the ghats

Dev Diwali is beautiful and crowded. Lamps, steps, and river water do not mix well with a rush. Stay on the stone you can see. Do not wade in because the crowd is moving. Hold children. Skip the edge if you have been drinking. A lamp at home is a complete way to keep Kartik Purnima if the ghat is a crush or the air is harsh. November evenings in the Indo-Gangetic plain can already be smoky. If your chest is tight, leave. There will be another full moon.

Training that day can be the walk to and from the gathering. Do not stack a hard gym session on a late, cold night. Wednesday morning is for a normal breakfast and an easy walk once you have slept. Strength can sit on Thursday.

Langar seating is often on the floor. If your knees or back will not do a long sit, ask for a chair. Gurdwaras are used to that request. Cover your head with something that will not slip into your eyes on a walk. And if you are hosting people afterward, the second meal at home can be small. You already ate. A late kheer on top of a full langar is how the night stops being restful. Drink water. The cold makes people forget they are thirsty.

FAQ

When is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026?

Tuesday, 24 November 2026. Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali fall on the same date.

Is langar enough food?

A proper serving of roti, dal, and vegetables is a real meal. Eat it. Do not skip it because you plan to train later.

Can I go into the river?

Not if you cannot stand securely, not with children unsupervised, and not after alcohol. The lamps do not need you in the water.

What if the air is bad?

Keep the ritual indoors or leave the ghat early. A tight chest is a reason to stop, not to stay for the photograph.

How long is a nagar kirtan?

It varies. Dress for the distance and the cold, and leave when you are done. Nobody is keeping score.

What about the next morning?

Sleep, breakfast, a walk. The full moon does not require a makeup workout.
