Hariyali Teej 2026: A Monsoon Fast That Still Lets You Stand Up

Hariyali Teej 2026: Green Clothes, a Real Plan for the Fast

Hariyali Teej in 2026 fell on Saturday, 15 August, during Shravan, on the same day as India's 80th Independence Day. The Shukla Paksha Tritiya tithi began on the evening of 14 August and ran until the late afternoon of the 15th, so the observance sat on the 15th because that is when the tithi was current at sunrise. North Indian households marked it for Parvati and Shiva: green clothes, mehendi, swings, songs, and, for many women, a fast.

The fast is not one thing. Some families keep nirjala, with no food and no water. Others keep a phalahar fast: fruit, milk, and the foods their tradition allows. A nirjala fast is a custom. It is not a medical requirement, and it is a poor idea in monsoon humidity if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, prone to fainting, or already unwell. The festival survives a glass of water. It does not survive a collapse on a swing.

Check the muhurat in your own city. Delhi timings do not govern Jaipur or Lucknow. This is a health note beside the vrat, not a priest's instruction.

If you are fasting

  • Decide the night before whether you are doing nirjala, phalahar, or a normal day with the puja only. Do not improvise at noon when you are dizzy.
  • People on insulin, blood pressure tablets, or medicines that need food should talk to their clinician before a waterless day. Skipping tablets to "keep the fast pure" is how people get hurt.
  • If you choose phalahar, eat the fruit and drink the milk or water you are allowed. Sipping nothing until you are faint is not more devout.
  • Break the fast after the evening puja and katha, the way your family does it. A huge fried plate on an empty, dehydrated stomach is the part that makes people sick. Start with water, then something gentle, then the sweet.
  • Pregnant women can dress, sing, and sit for the katha without a nirjala fast. The baby does not need the test.

Training around the day

The day before: an easy walk, then stop. Teej morning is not a leg day. Swings, standing for puja, and humidity are already a session. If you feel well and you are not in a waterless fast, a short stroll in the cooler hour is enough. Skip a hot yoga class, a long run, and any plan that needs you to sweat on purpose.

The day after, which in 2026 was a Sunday, is for a normal breakfast, a walk, and sleep. Mehendi will not stop you training, but a fresh design will smear if you jump into a sweaty workout immediately. Give it the drying time your artist asked for, then return to strength on Monday if your head is clear.

Green is the colour of the day, and the monsoon is the reason. If you are out for the swing and the songs, cover your head, sit when the circle gets long, and do not treat a packed courtyard as a sauna you have to endure. Women who have been on their feet since dawn cooking the vrat food need a chair and a real break, not a compliment about how light they look from fasting. If the fast broke late, keep dinner small and salty food moderate so you sleep. Sunday strength can be two sets of a squat to a chair, a row, and a carry. That is a return, not a punishment for the laddoo.

15 August was also the flag. If your house did both, do the hoisting in the morning while you still have energy, sit down, and do not stack a nirjala fast on top of a packed humid ground. Water if your fast allows it. A chair if it does not and you feel wrong.

FAQ

When was Hariyali Teej 2026?

Saturday, 15 August 2026. It shared the date with Independence Day.

Is a nirjala fast required?

It is traditional for some families. It is unsafe for many bodies. Phalahar, or no fast, is a valid way to keep the day if your health needs it.

Can I work out while fasting?

Not a hard session, and not at all if you are without water. A short easy walk only if you feel well and your fast allows fluid.

I have diabetes. What should I do?

Do not copy a waterless fast from a relative. Keep your medicines and your meals on the plan your clinician gave you, and still join the puja.

When do people break the fast?

Usually after the evening puja. Confirm the tithi end and the custom in your city. In 2026 the tithi ended in the late afternoon, so local guidance mattered.

What about the swing?

A decorated jhula is part of the day. Hold on, skip it if you are dizzy, and do not put a child on a swing that is not secure.
